Cat Repellers. So much info and more to come.

Update on StopUpest.com

Thumb image 1Wow so much information and products just to stop cats pooing on your lawn. When I first started this project I imagined that this was a small quick subject, where I would find only 2 or 3 products that keep cats away.

But no! this  is massive… I’ve reviewed 10 cat repellers and I’m nowhere near finished with this pest problem.

But worse… I’ve taken my eye off the ball and strayed into dog training problems! that on its own is annoying (because I know I can flit from subject to subject without finishing one), but I hadn’t even realized that dogs were pests!

I knew this stopUpest.com would be a work in progress but it’s going to turn into a monster and strangely I’m relishing the prospect.

I know I’ve only just started this site but already I’ve learned so much. Unfortunately so far Google hasn’t found my information relevant and not yet ranked any of my pages. I’m loving making this site and I’ll continue for myself… But it would be nice to help other people too.

Main review

How much does it cover?

This Aspectek sentinel covers a massive 5,000 sq. ft. of your yard that’s a distance of 70 ft. that just one sentinel can keep cat free for you.

Works at night

This scarer comes with a built-in infra-red heat sensor which will detect the heat signature of your pest up to 70 feet away, but it can be adjusted to make it less sensitive if you wish to cover only a section of your yard. Because it uses a heat detector to find pests it will work both day and night… Darkness is not a cover!

Utltrasonic Blast

Pests are hit with an Inaudible High Pressure Ultrasonic Sound Wave when they come into range. Good news, it’s inaudible to humans so we are not affected or inconvenienced by the sound, but it scares the life out of its target.

Can also stop theft

If you select the intruder alarm setting, the yard Sentinel will produce a loud audible alarm letting you know that it has been triggered, so turning it into a burglar alarm.

Settings

There are 3 settings you can use.

  • Motion sensor – This setting triggers the ultrasonic sound only when a heat signature is in range. This is a great setting if you use batteries only.
  • Constant – This gives out a constant ultrasonic sound giving warning to animals and making them uncomfortable to be near.
  • Continuous Sweep – gives out ultrasonic sounds at different frequencies at random time intervals which will startle pests as well as making them uncomfortable to be near.

Next there are 3 time settings “All the time, day or night”. This gives you more options to save power from the battery.

Yard SentinelThe Yard Sentinel can be powered in various ways. AC via a supplied 33 foot extension cord or 6V – 24V DC battery power sources including a vehicle power source, by connecting to the Cigarette Lighter Socket, and DC Sealed lead-Acid (SLA) battery power source

This yard scarer is very easy to install, either place on the ground or mount to a wall. Just face it towards the area you want to be pest free.

Safe deterrent

A great feature of all ultrasonic pest deterrents is that they just use sound to keep your yard clear. No chemicals or traps are used just sound, making this a humane safe deterrent.

I’m amazed at the number of different pests the Sentinel will scare away. Here is the list again Rodents, Sea Rodents, Seagulls, Insects, Rats, Mouse, Birds, Bears, Deer, Dogs, Cats, Raccoon, Ducks, Geese, Squirrels, Skunks, Foxes…

I hope you have enjoyed the review, check out below some of the comments made by customers who have bought this product, or you can click here Amazon USA or Amazon UK to buy the Yard Sentinel. I recommend you purchase from Amazon for the best prices and prompt delivery.

Customer Comments

One lady with a very large garden was extremely pleased with this device not only did it stop rabbits, deer and other animals from eating her veg patch but it also kept cats and dogs away! How about that, not just one pest problem cured but at least 4 just from one sentinel.

A problem that seems to crop up is that it is too sensitive! Even on the lowest setting it will detect movement 20 feet away.

I’m pleased to say that the majority of comments was positive so I can recommend this product for you.

Ultrasonic cat repellent | Keep cats out of your garden | Cat deterrent

Ultrasonic cat repellent

sonic cat repellerUltrasonic cat deterrents are safe cheap solution to stopping cats pooping in your garden and come in various guises:

  • Main power
  • Battery powered
  • Solar/ battery-powered

However they all work in the same way. They have a motion or infra-red heat detector that when triggered emits a high pitch noise inaudible to the human ear (if you can hear it the settings can be changed) that either scares the cat or just makes it uncomfortable to be around. If they don’t detect any motion they turn off after about 20 seconds saving battery life.

How good are they?

Cats are creatures of habit and if there habit is to use your garden as a toilet then it needs to be broken and this takes time. Unfortunately not all cats are the same! Some are old, deaf, belligerent or just well hard and not scared of anything… so this can take anything from 3 days to 3 months to stop their vandalism of your garden.

A sad fact of ultrasonic repellent is that they are not discriminatory… They will also scare / upset your own pets so unless you want a total cat free area they are not suitable for pet owners.

Is there a better way to keep cats out of your garden?

A Sonic cat repeller is a cheap affordable cat deterrent better than gels and sprays but not as good as more expensive water sprayers. If you have tried the gels and sprays and not found them successful an ultrasonic cat repellent is a great addition to your arsenal. Many successful garden owners use both sonic devises and sprays to get a cat free garden or yard.

Extra bonus of sonic cat scarers.

Not only do they keep cats away but they are also supposed to stop:

  • Dogs
  • Foxes
  • Squirrels
  • Rodents
  • Insects (damn big swarms to trigger the device!)
  • Roaches (again how do they set it off?)

Conclusion

I myself owned one of these some years ago to keep cats out of my back yard, which was pebbled and nearly impossible to sort cat poo from pebbles. I positioned it to cover the whole yard and never had any trouble from cats since. Even though I was 35ish I could not hear or tell if the ultrasonic cat scarer was on or not now at 50 there is no way my hearing would pick up the sound of one of these even if it was set wrong. I do recommend a sonic cat repeller.

Homemade Cat repellent Sprays

Homemade Cat repellent Sprays

How to keep cats out of gardenSave money and save the environment while still keeping cats out of your garden. Homemade cat deterrent sprays are a cheap natural 1st step to having a cat free garden or training your pet.

Making your own spray ensures that you know exactly what is in it, that way you know it is environmentally friendly and you can also make it smell nice for your own nose.

I have discovered that one cat deterrent can work extremely well for one cat but not for another. So I have compiled a few recipes below, try them all until you find one that works for you.

If you know of any other home made cat deterrent sprays that work please let us know in the comments below. Thank you.

The first recipes are very simple to make.

Lavender essential oil.

Add 5 to 10 drops of lavender essential oil to one pint of water. Put in a spray bottle and shake well…Spray the area you wish cats to avoid.

Peppermint essential oil.

Essential oils Add 5 to 10 drops of peppermint essential oil to one pint of water. Put in a spray bottle and shake well…Spray the area you wish cats to avoid.

Orange essential oil.

Add 5 to 10 drops of orange essential oil to one pint of water. Put in a spray bottle and shake well…Spray the area you wish cats to avoid.

Lemon and Eucalyptus.

Add 5 drops of lemon oil or the zest of one lemon and 10 drops of eucalyptus oil to one pint of water. Put in a spray bottle and shake well…Spray the area you wish cats to avoid

Olbas Oil and Witch Hazel.

Add about 20 drops of Olbas Oil to one pint of water. Add a generous splash of witch hazel and a few drops of washing up liquid. Put in a spray bottle and shake well…Spray the area you wish cats to avoid

Do not spray on cats!  Cats are not able to process essential oils and this spray will prove toxic if sprayed onto the cat or ingested by it.

You could soak cotton balls in the mixture and leave those out in the areas to be avoided.

The next requires a bit more work.

Cinnamon, Rosemary, and Lavender

  • Add 3 tablespoons of Cinnamon, Rosemary, and Lavender to a pint of boiling water.
  • Leave to steep for several hours
  • Strain the liquid through fine muslin or any other fine cloth (pot towel, t-shirt etc.)
  • Add ¾ cup of vinegar and 10 to 15 drops of orange essential oil.
  • Pour into a spray bottle and shake well.

Pepper spray

Homemade cat spray

Cats don’t like the smell of pepper, so this mixture is especially good deterrent to them.

  • Boil a pint of water then leave to cool for 5 mins.
  • Add 4 tablespoons of black pepper into the water. Stir to dissolve and leave to cool.

Note: be careful when adding the pepper into the water. Take care not to get any steam from the solution in your eyes, as it could act like mace and temporarily debilitate you.

When cool, place into a spray bottle and spray outdoors on the area you want cats to stay away from.

Warning

Do not spray essential oils directly onto plants as this could be detrimental to the health of your plants and herbs, but probably not in the concentration described below.

Some homemade sprays can contain essential oils or pepper which can cause actual harm to cats so use with caution.

Get off cat and dog repellent sprayI have researched Rosewood Get off Dog and Cat Repellent Spray and I’ll answer the following questions for you:

What Is Get off Repellent Spray?

Get off Repellent spray smells strongly of citrus which animals find uncomfortable to be around, making this spray one of the easiest ways to stop cats and dogs using your garden as a toilet. Just spray around the areas that you wish to discourage cats and dogs from going near.

Users use it both for keeping cats and dogs from fouling their garden and yards but also as an indoor pet trainer.

What does it do?

Cats and dogs find this spray an irritant to their senses so when they come across areas sprayed with Get Off they move on to better fresher areas.

To stop cats and dogs from repeatedly fouling your garden you have to break their toilet habit. This can take anything from 3 weeks to 3 months, but once they are in the habit of using another area they shouldn’t come back to your garden.

How does it do it?

Rosewood Get Off contains Methyl Nonyl Ketone 3.47% (a cat and dog pesticide More info here) and also citrus oils which together cats and dogs find as an irritant. They will avoid this spray and smell if possible.

If you can make cats and dogs use another area for their toilet instead of your lawn they will continue to leave your lawn and flowers alone. This may take anything from 3 weeks to 3 months… All cats and dogs are different!

Why should you use it?

Get off cat and dog repellent spray thumbGet your garden back! A very easy to use cat and dog repellent that will rid your garden and lawn from cats and dogs that think it is their toilet. As you can target specific areas with this spray it is suitable for cat and dog owners too.

However a word of warning! Do not use near ornamental ponds, or those containing fish. Do not use on edible crops.

Is it any good?

Get Off Dog and Cat Repellent Spray like all other cat and dog deterrents has mixed results, with some users having excellent results, and unfortunately other users believing it to be a waste of money and a total failure.

The downside to repellent sprays is that it does have to be re-applied periodically and after rain fall

Conclusion

Would I buy Get off Dog and Cat Repellent Spray ? …Yes and no

Yes for outdoors. The better results have been from users who are trying to stop cats and dogs from using their garden as a toilet.

No for indoors.  For indoor training of pets I would try something different. This product has a strong smell that most people find repulsive (however one user uses it as an air freshener!) also the results from indoor training of pets are very low.
